Kanya Jagrit Joti Scheme was launched in 1996-97 in Punjab State. The girl child born on or after 26.01.96 in the families living below poverty line or annual income below Rs. 20,000/- are covered under this scheme. The family of the beneficiary will adopt two child family norm and only two girl children of the family will be covered under the scheme. The main objective of the scheme is to uplift the social status of girls and to reduce school drop out. The beneficiaries will have to study upto matric. An amount of Rs.5000/- is deposited with the L.I.C. in the name of beneficiary. When the girl child attains the age of six years, she will get Rs.1200/- per annum as scholarship upto 12 years and this amount will be increased to Rs.2400/- from 12 years to 18 years for her studies. 26200 beneficiaries have been covered up to 31-3-2006
During the year 2005-06 there was a budget provision of Rs. 200.00 lac, expenditure is Rs. 200.00 lac and 4000 beneficiaries have been covered under the scheme. A budget provision of Rs. 200.00 lac is earmarked for the year 2006-07.
